My Child Has the Strangest Manners

Okay so long time, no talk! So there is going to be like a post overload today and this weekend!😁

Kota is going to be TWO next month (how????😭) and she just has the STRANGEST manners for an almost 2 year old. Maybe it's just me but listen:
  • She says "Thank You" to everything. Its so cute
  • She coughs into her elbow - where she picked this up? I have no idea
  • She pushes in her chair everytime
  • She will pick up her toys or at least help me when I ask
  • She will bring me certain things for Chey if I ask her
She is so smart and I just love her BUT you try and get her to say "please" for anything and it's a meltdown. I have no clue why. Kids are fun😅

Dakota Lynne - 18 Months

Unfortunately due to all the craziness, I obviously missed sharing a lot of monthly updates with Kota but here is the up to date news on Kota or Squish. Whichever you prefer.

  • We babble and say a variety of words - blankie, night-night, buh-bye, DeeDee (referring to Diesel), Dad, baby, puppy (EVERYTHING is a puppy...), Hi, NaNa, etc
  • Our favorite movie is Shrek - literally only movie she will watch
  • We can apparently take our pants off - just happened as I'm typing this
  • We can climb out of our crib and refuse to stay in it
  • Diesel is her partner in crime - legit he knocks down the baby gates for her and she feeds him food off her tray
  • We run EVERYWHERE
  • We love going buh-bye but don't like being in the car too long
  • We LOVE our little sister (but still a little too rough
  • We know where our belly and our toes are
  • Our favorite foods are hotdogs and mac and cheese
  • Favorite toys are a basketball and empty boxes
  • Our eye teeth are almost in and we will have all of our teeth (except 2 year molars)
  • She's about 27 pounds, 18-24 month clothes, size 5 diapers, still just tall and lanky like her dad
Overall, she's a sassy little handful but I love my little mini. So enjoy some pictures of Squish 😍☺️

Life with Kota [12-17-18]

The way our house is set up, we have the living room and the "spare room" as our baby proofed "Kota area" then we have a baby fence across the dining room doorway and a gate on the stairway so she is pretty restricted to two large rooms. Well, I was in the kitchen making lunch and doing dishes so I let her out there with me. Of course, shes getting into the dog food and throwing his bowl around but then things go quiet. I look around and can't find Kota ANYWHERE. Then I hear a giggle from the laundry room:

This hoodlum had figured out how to open the dryer and just climbed on in. Needless to say, I'm glad I didn't use it all weekend.

Dakota - 5 Months

Because we matched and it was great.
Baby Dakota is growing way too fast... I'm not crying I swear... Since we do appointments every two months, I can give weight and length but here's what's new since last month:

  • We stick EVERYTHING in our mouth: Our hands, mommy's fingers, toys, blankets, washcloths, etc.
  • Laying down is not as fun as sitting up
  • Everything peaks our interest and it's hard to focus when eating
  • 0-3 onesies are officially getting too tight and we've pulled out all the 6 month clothes
  • Our first tooth is starting to come in and it's making us fussy these days

Dakota's First Halloween

Unfortunately, it was ridiculously cold and raining the evening of Trick or Treat in our town so I didn't feel comfortable taking her out in it (especially when we would just be gathering candy for ourselves). BUT I did get the baby a costume! I apologize for the poor quality and lack of pictures...

She was a little dinosaur! She spent the entire time just tryin to eat the hood.. I found it on Amazon and I loved it. It's super soft, fits her well, and since the spikes are foldable, she still wears it to bed some nights. 10/10 great investment.

Dakota - 4 Months

Baby Kota is 4 months old, guys! Technically, it was yesterday the 15th but her 4 month appointment was this morning so I held off til now.
  • 12 pounds 14 ounces
  • 25 inches long
  • Sleeping 7-8 hours a night
  • Figured out how to grab her blankets and stick it in her mouth or over her head
  • Not quite rolling over yet and still a bit of a bobble head
  • Moved up to 8 ounce bottles and standard nipples instead of premie
  • Size 0-3 onesies and 6 months pants (all legs like her parents)
  • Always smiling and cooing
  • Loves to sit with Daddy and watch tv or the iPad❤️
She’s getting so big and it makes me so happy and so sad... I apologize for the picture overload to follow. Sorry not sorry.

This post is written on this new blogging app I got for the iPad so hopefully it works but bare with me and I’ll double check on my laptop.

Miscarriage and Rainbow Baby

When I was pregnant with Kota, my friend and I were talking and she said something along the lines of: "This is your rainbow baby" and I was like "huh?". I had never heard the term or phrase before so she explained it to me:

A rainbow baby is a baby born shortly after the loss of a previous baby due to miscarriage, stillbirth, or death in infancy. This term is given to these special rainbow babies because a rainbow typically follows a storm, giving us hope of what’s to come.
Taken from Here

I had my first miscarriage when I was 17 years old, a senior in high school, and after getting the mirena IUD put in right afterwards, I was told multiple times that I couldn't have kids. The mirena didn't end up working out for me so I had it removed and started getting the Depo shot. Then I found that the hormones in it were making my hair thin out super bad (I'll touch on pros and cons of the Depo shot in a post next week) so I decided that since I couldn't have kids then why be on birth control?

Two YEARS later I was joking around with my friends at work that I was late for my period. They ended up running me to wal mart and I took a test (then two more when I go home just to be sure) to find out that I was pregnant. I was terrified to tell J because he already had enough to handle with his two older children and we had no intention of having kids. Slowly, we got used to the idea and even got excited. I refused to tell anyone til I hit at least 10 weeks because I couldn't go through the torture of explaining to everyone that I had lost it. Unfortunately, this didn't work out because people at work found out pretty quick.

No more than a month later I started spotting. I tried not to panic, trying to convince myself that it was just old blood and everything was fine. My OB refused to see me until I was 10 weeks so I wasn't even sure how far along I was for sure. It was only a day or two before I started gushing blood and passing clots. At around midnight one night in May, I told J, I needed to go to the hospital and we went. The doctors said my hormone levels looked good but that wasn't anything to get excited about. They didn't have any open rooms so I had to "sleep" (aka toss and turn all night) on an ER cot and J was told he had to leave until they could do an ultrasound at 7am the next morning.

I was taken down to the ultrasound and the tech couldn't find a heartbeat and of course my heart broke into a million pieces. We left the hospital and I gathered myself together and went back to work. I put it out of my mind and worked through the pain as my body passed all the clots. Refusing to cry but silently dying, J and I fell apart. I blamed myself for not being good enough, for not doing enough, for being an awful person.

Fast forward through a very self destructive summer, I had my seizure incident (stay tuned tonight or tomorrow I'll have another deep post about all that..) and right before thanksgiving I found out I was pregnant with Kota. Obviously, I was a mess of nerves and anxiety about doing it all over again but I was excited.

Kota is my little rainbow baby. The heaven after all the hell I went through. My little miracle. Even as she's currently stirring in her crib, meaning I'm about to have another couple of hours of fighting her to sleep, I don't know what I would do without her.

Dakota Lynne

She will be commonly referred to as "Kota", "Kota-bug", "Kota-bear", and sometimes Squishy or "my wittle". Also, she may or may not be named after the Dodge Dakota because we just aren't redneck enough. Her middle name is from J's mom (her grandma), a woman that I deeply admire for her strength, selflessness, and heart. I honestly hope Kota grows up to have such qualities.

Last November, shortly after my seizure incident (will touch on this later), I found out I was pregnant after having a massive breakdown about some restaurant messing up my food. Yes, that's how I knew I was pregnant. So this was actually my third pregnancy (one when I was 17 and J and I had one just the July before). It was completely unplanned and I was actually supposed to get the IUD put in (I had issues with the shot) when I ended up stuck in the hospital for my seizures and had to reschedule it then found out I was pregnant before my next appointment.

Pregnancy was not good to me. I have no idea why anyone would enjoy it (other than the kicks and movement. That was pretty cool). But then again, I got pregnant at the WORST time possible, my first trimester was in the dead of winter and my third was in the blazing part of summer. During my first trimester, I got sick with anything and everything - strep, upper respiratory infection, bronchitis, ear infection, and even the stomach flu. I never really had morning sickness or heartburn at all but I was still plenty miserable.

Then the swelling happened. At my last appointment I was over 200 lbs(I started at 132 and generally weigh around 135) because I was retaining a minimum of 20lbs of water all over my body. Like my fingers, belly, and everything from the waist down was just blown up to the point that I now have stretch marks on my calves from how much they stretched with all the water. It was brutal. Especially because I was working 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week to try and save for maternity leave. Well around my 28 week appointment they diagnosed me with preeclampsia because of the swelling, elevated blood pressure, and protein in my urine samples.

On June 9th, I went in for a regular blood pressure check up and non stress test for the baby and was admitted to the hospital for observation. They had decided that I was going to be induced by 37 weeks but they really wanted to make it to 36 to ensure the baby would be healthy. As a precaution, they gave me two steroid shots to help her lung develop. I was released the next day (just in time so I didn't miss my own baby shower) and went back to work until the 14th when I admitted myself because the swelling was so bad I could barely move at all.

They did several rounds of blood work and hooked me up to all the monitors. My blood pressure was dangerously high (though it didn't seem to be bothering the baby at all) and my urine came back with a protein level higher than the nurse had ever seen (apparently its supposed to be around .9 and mine was 5.5) so she said "within 24 hours there will be a baby". At this point I was only a centimeter dilated and only 33 weeks along. Because my blood pressure was still through the roof, I was hooked up to an IV of magnesium sulfate and had to have a catheter. They used this tube thing to manually get me dialated and then started to induce. J showed up that afternoon and my family from Tennessee and West Virginia showed up that night. I had decided prior to going in that I didn't want the epidural because of my fear of needles so all night I suffered through horrible contractions and my mom trying to keep me semi calm. Sometime early morning they nurse finally aggressively insisted I get the epidural because my blood pressure was so bad I was putting the baby at risk. They broke my water later that morning and Dakota Lynne Duncan was born at 10:22 am on June 15th, 2017 weighing 5 pounds 1 ounce and measuring 17 and 3/4 inches.

They put her on my chest for a split second and then she was gone to the NICU where she was locked up for 10 days after she was born. I was also stuck in the hospital for 4 days after delivery because of my high blood pressure continuing. I ended up on two different medications that I was off of by my 6 week check up. Dakota was on a CPAP machine for her lungs and in the box (incubator) until she could regulate her own body temperature. She also had jaundice for a time and had to be under the blue lights. Then of course she failed the stupid car seat test the first time (for those of you who don't know, premature babies have to be able to sit in a car seat for like 2 hours with all their monitors to make sure that they can make it without their vitals dropping if they needed to be transported to Columbus) so that was a set back. This whole time we were told that she was making amazing progress and as soon as she passed the car seat test, she could leave. Well then we came to find out that we weren't allowed to leave until she was "35 weeks gestation" so we had to stay even longer.

All in all, I was not impressed with the doctors and most of the nurses were not helpful and just rude and condescending. The whole thing was extremely difficult for me because everyone else was in mom and baby wing with their babies and my daughter was locked in a damn box where I could only visit. Emotionally, it was everything I had to keep it together because I knew breaking down wouldn't help any. We had to stay in a hospitality suite in a different building and walk to the nursery every three hours so I could feed her. It was like 5 miles a day... after I had just popped out a baby... it was miserable. Finally, the 25th of June, Kota and I got to go home.
